When you’re looking for roof windows, you’ll come across a few different brands. Some of the most reputable are Fakro, Keylite and Velux. So, what sets them apart? And which is best for you?

In this article, we’ll introduce the three different brands and compare them all.

Introducing Keylite

Let’s start with Keylite, which is Europe’s fastest-growing manufacturer of roof windows. Founded in 2001, it’s a relative newcomer to the roof windows industry – but still one that offers over 20 years of experience.

Unlike many other roof window brands, Keylight is a UK-based company. However, their products are actually manufactured in Poland, before being distributed from Burton upon Trent and Cookstown in Northern Ireland.

One of the main selling points for Keylite is their price. Roof windows are available from as little as £105, meaning you can usually find a Keylite window within your budget. That’s not to say the products themselves aren’t high quality – they come with guarantees of up to 20 years.

In terms of installation, their innovative Flick-Fit brackets are a big selling point too. They allow you to install your windows within two minutes “from box to roof”. The pre-fitted brackets are simply flicked into place with an option for tile or slate roofs, before being screwed in to secure the fixture.

At Roof Window Outlet, we provide Keylite flat roof windows, pitched roof windows, sun tunnels, blinds and more!

Fakro: the basics

Next on the list is Fakro, which has been around a little longer – since 1991. Based in Poland, this company has an unwavering commitment to innovation, with over 100 staff in its very own research department.

Their days spent inventing and testing haven’t been wasted. Fakro roof windows come with options like thermally efficient triple glazing and triple or even quadruple sealing system. Their products are certified by the likes of Energy Star, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association (IGMA) and Insulating Glass Certification Council (IGCC).

Fakro products are put through 70 control tests using high-tech equipment. So, it’s no surprise that windows come with a 10-year guarantee.

What about Velux?

Velux is probably the best-known brand for roof windows. Based in Denmark, the company has been operating for over 70 years, with its brand becoming synonymous with roof windows or skylights.

That doesn’t mean they’ve rested on their laurels. Velux continues to innovate and improve its products. For example, Velux Integra is a remote-controlled system which allows shutters, blinds and windows to be opened and closed using a simple wall switch. They also carry similar certifications to Fakro, such as IGCC, IGMA, NFRC and Energy Star.

As you’d expect from a brand of its standing, Velux offers a lengthy manufacturer’s warranty of 10 years. That’s paired with 25 years’ availability for spare parts on all new windows. In short, that means you don’t have to worry about parts becoming obsolete if you need to fix your windows.

Keylite vs Velux

When comparing the brands, Velux is the more well established between Keylite vs Velux. The Danes have been making windows for over 70 years, compared to 20 for their UK counterparts.

That’s reflected in the price, however, with Velux typically costing significantly more than Keylite windows.

Customers choose Velux because of their long-standing reputation, and they’re happy to pay more for that assurance. However, Keylite windows are still high in quality and well guaranteed, making them suitable for customers on a budget.

Fakro vs Velux

When it comes to Fakro vs Velux, there’s less of a price distinction. Both brands are considered premium when it comes to roof windows. They both offer a similar range of products too, whether it’s pivot or hung, double or triple glazing, or electrically operated fixtures.

Fakro is typically seen as the more innovative of the two. It was ahead of the game when it came to energy efficiency, although it was inevitable that a company of Velux’s standing caught up.

Today, both offer a premium option for your windows. There may be a slight difference in price, with Fakro generally the lower of the two.
